SAN Terminal Guide

Which Terminal Is Your Airline?

SAN has two terminals connected post-security. If you're in the wrong terminal, go through security in either — they connect airside.

Terminal 1
Southwest · Alaska · Frontier · Spirit
Closest to Harbor Drive. Smaller gates. Shorter security lines on average.
Terminal 2 West
American · United · Delta (domestic)
Main hub terminal. TSA PreCheck available. Longer queues peak hours.
Terminal 2 East
International · Delta (intl) · United (intl)
Cross-border CBX connector. Customs and Border Protection here.
Commuter Terminal
Cape Air · Charter flights
West of T1. Small prop aircraft. No TSA PreCheck lane.
Common SAN delay causes:
  • Marine layer fog — morning low ceilings, typically lifts by 9-10am
  • Afternoon wind shear — Cajon Pass effect creates ground holds 2–5pm
  • Hub cascades — ground stops at LAX/ORD/JFK ripple to SAN 2–4 hrs later
  • Single runway — one runway means zero redundancy when ATC holds fire

Action Plan

Your Flight Is Delayed — Do This in Order

1

Check the airline app first — not the departure board

The gate board updates slower than the app. Open the airline's app immediately. If delay shows "equipment" or "late arriving aircraft" — it's likely to compress. If it says "crew" — it may extend.

2

Call the airline's 1-800 while you walk to the gate

Gate agents can only rebook passengers at their gate. The phone agent can access all flights system-wide. Call while walking — you'll often get rebooked before you arrive at the gate.

3

Check LAX / SFO connections on your own

If your connection is at risk, search the airline's app for alternative routings before the agent suggests one. Come to the counter with 2–3 options ready. Agents rebook faster when you've done the legwork.

4

Ask for meal vouchers if delay is 3+ hours (controllable)

Weather = no vouchers required. Mechanical, crew, late aircraft = you're entitled to ask. Most agents have $15–20 meal vouchers. The word "controllable delay" unlocks this conversation.

5

If cancelled: don't leave the airport yet

First flight next morning goes fastest to people already in the system. Get rebooked at the counter before heading to a hotel. If the line is long, call and wait simultaneously.
